Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season continued on Saturday after they suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The result leaves Tottenham still searching for their first Premier League victory of the campaign after five matches, adding further pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi and his squad.
Tottenham started the match positively and created opportunities, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced several important saves to keep the hosts from taking the lead.
Villa eventually broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Johan Manzambi capitalised on a defensive mistake to put the visitors 1-0 ahead just before the break.
Aston Villa then increased their advantage after the restart. Nicolas Jackson produced a fine finish to make it 2-0 before Emiliano Buendía added a third with a spectacular long-range strike.
Tottenham responded late in the game. Substitute Conor Gallagher pulled one back before Jan Paul van Hecke scored deep into stoppage time to make it 3-2.
Despite the late comeback attempt, Spurs could not find an equaliser, with Aston Villa holding on for a crucial away victory.
The defeat is another setback for Tottenham, who had entered the match still without a league win and had yet to score in their first four Premier League matches. Their two goals against Villa finally ended that scoring drought, but they were not enough to secure points.
For Aston Villa, the victory provided their first Premier League win of the season and lifted them away from the bottom of the table.
Tottenham will now have the international break to regroup before returning to Premier League action, with supporters expecting a strong response after another disappointing result.
