Real Madrid suffered their second LaLiga defeat of the season after falling 2–1 to Atlético Madrid in a fiercely contested Madrid derby at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
The first half ended goalless, with neither side able to find a breakthrough in a tense and physical opening 45 minutes. The contest changed dramatically early in the second half when Dean Huijsen was sent off after bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the box. The initial yellow card was upgraded to a red following a VAR review, leaving Real Madrid with ten men.
Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up to convert the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute, putting Atlético ahead. Just six minutes later, Jonathan David doubled the hosts' advantage, capitalising on Atlético's numerical superiority and putting Real Madrid under serious pressure.
Real Madrid refused to surrender. Antonio Rüdiger gave the visitors renewed hope when he headed home in the 89th minute, but Atlético held firm during the closing stages to secure all three points.
The defeat is also Mourinho's first league loss against Atlético Madrid as Real Madrid manager. During his first spell at the club, he won all six of his LaLiga derbies against Atlético.
The result also reshapes the top end of the LaLiga table. Atlético moved above Real Madrid into second place with 16 points, while Los Blancos dropped to third, with Barcelona sitting top and six points clear of Mourinho's side after seven matches.
For Real Madrid, the derby offered another reminder of how quickly a game can turn at the highest level. Down to ten men and two goals behind, they fought until the final whistle, but Rüdiger's late strike was not enough to rescue a point from a dramatic night in Madrid.
