Citizen TV journalist and Nyakach parliamentary aspirant Trevor Ombija has alleged that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sought to have him dismissed from Royal Media Services (RMS) following a heated television interview between the two in March 2026.
Ombija made the allegations on Friday, September 18, 2026, while addressing residents in Nyakach as he stepped up his political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to Ombija, the alleged attempt to have him removed from his job came after the two had a confrontation during the interview.
> “As you see me standing here, Gachagua had made calls to try and get me fired from my job because we confronted each other,” Ombija said, according to reports of his remarks.
Ombija further alleged that his ethnic background was brought into the dispute surrounding his position at the media company. Another report quoted him claiming that Gachagua wanted him dismissed because he was Luo.
THE MARCH INTERVIEW
The latest allegations are linked to a tense interview between Ombija and Gachagua in March 2026.
During the interview, Gachagua accused Ombija of being biased and conducting what he described as an unprofessional interview. The exchange became heated as the journalist pressed the former Deputy President on various political issues.
Gachagua also questioned the nature of the programme and referred to it as a “tribal show” while responding to questions concerning allegations of tribal politics. Ombija, however, maintained that Gachagua had requested the interview.
The confrontation subsequently attracted significant attention, with clips of the exchange circulating widely online.
OMBIJA'S MOVE INTO POLITICS
Ombija's latest remarks come as he transitions from journalism into active politics.
The journalist has declared his intention to contest the Nyakach parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election. He has also publicly expressed support for President William Ruto and the broad-based government.
Speaking to supporters in Nyakach, Ombija linked his political position to what he described as support he received from President Ruto during the alleged dispute.
CLAIMS HAVE NOT BEEN INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED
The allegation that Gachagua contacted RMS management seeking Ombija's dismissal has not been independently verified.
As of the reports published on September 19, neither Gachagua nor Royal Media Services had publicly confirmed that such a request was made. Kenyans.co.ke specifically noted that it could not independently verify the claim.
The matter therefore remains an allegation made publicly by Ombija, with no independent evidence of the alleged communication between Gachagua and RMS having been published in the reports reviewed.
The claims are likely to attract further attention as Ombija continues his campaign for the Nyakach parliamentary seat and as questions surrounding the March interview continue to resurface.
