Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the late Kenyan politician Cyrus Jirongo, revealing that he had only recently learnt that the former Lugari MP had died in a road accident last December.
In a statement shared on Monday, September 21, 2026, Museveni said he was unaware of Jirongo's death when he recently mentioned him while discussing Uganda's petroleum procurement arrangements.

“I have just learnt that Senator Cyrus Jirongo passed away last December in a motor accident. I was not aware that he had died,” Museveni said.
The Ugandan President described Jirongo as a good and patriotic leader who served Kenya with dedication.
“This is very sad. Jirongo was a good and patriotic leader who served his country with dedication. We shall miss him,” Museveni said.
He extended his condolences to Jirongo's family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya, praying for the late politician's soul to rest in peace.
Jirongo died on December 13, 2025, following a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in the Karai area of Naivasha. He was a former Lugari MP and Cabinet minister.

Museveni's tribute comes shortly after he identified Jirongo as the Kenyan politician who, around 2019, alerted him to concerns over Uganda's purchase of petroleum products through middlemen in Kenya. Museveni said the information contributed to Uganda changing its approach to fuel procurement.
The revelation has now placed Jirongo back in the spotlight, months after his death, as debate continues over the Kenya-Uganda Government-to-Government petroleum arrangement.
