Questions are emerging over the whereabouts and political position of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i after he failed to attend the highly anticipated launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement Party on Friday, October 30, 2026.
The high-profile event, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, brought together several prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
However, Matiang’i's absence has sparked fresh debate about the unity and direction of the broader United Opposition as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Interior CS, who is associated with the Jubilee Party, had been among opposition figures expected to participate in the political engagements surrounding the launch. His absence has consequently raised questions about whether all opposition leaders are reading from the same political script.
The development comes amid growing political accusations and speculation, with some voices recently portraying Matiang’i as a possible mole within opposition ranks. However, these claims remain allegations and have not been independently established.
With different political formations emerging and leaders pursuing their own ambitions, Matiang’i's absence has added another layer of uncertainty to an opposition coalition that has repeatedly presented itself as united against President William Ruto's administration.
The big question now remains: Is Matiang’i simply pursuing a different political strategy, or are deeper disagreements emerging within the United Opposition?
For now, his absence speaks louder than the explanations yet to come.
