Kenya has commenced the destruction of a massive consignment of methamphetamine valued at approximately KSh8.2 billion, in an operation being carried out under heightened security in Mombasa.
The destruction exercise is taking place at Bamburi Cement, with senior government and security officials in attendance. Among those witnessing the operation are DCI Director Mohamed I. Amin, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, senior National Police Service officials and other stakeholders.
The narcotics were intercepted in October 2025 during a multi-agency maritime operation after a vessel suspected of transporting the illicit consignment was intercepted in the Indian Ocean off the Kenyan coast.
Following the completion of the required legal procedures and court processes, authorities have proceeded with the destruction of the seized drugs under court supervision.
The exercise marks another coordinated effort by Kenya’s security and law-enforcement agencies to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks and prevent large consignments of illegal drugs from reaching the local market or being transported to other destinations.
The operation also underscores the role of multi-agency cooperation in tackling the trafficking of narcotics through Kenya’s maritime routes.
