Kirinyaga gubernatorial campaigns have taken an unusual turn after Senator Kamau Murango was reportedly seen using branded urwaro as part of his campaign merchandise.
Murango, a close political ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is seeking to become the next Governor of Kirinyaga and appears to be taking his campaign branding beyond the usual T-shirts, caps and posters.
The senator's name has reportedly been printed on the traditional undergarments, sparking humorous reactions and debate among residents, particularly over cultural norms surrounding the branding of such clothing.
The unusual campaign merchandise has quickly become a talking point, with some social media users joking about how voters are expected to interpret a gubernatorial manifesto presented through such unconventional campaign items.
Murango has also reportedly promised women free sindilia if elected, adding another unusual element to his campaign messaging.
NGIRICI-MURANGO POLITICAL CONTEST
Murango is expected to face former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici in what could become an interesting gubernatorial contest.
The two politicians have been active in Kirinyaga politics, with the 2027 election expected to generate intense competition for the county's top seat.
The branded urwaro has now added a humorous dimension to the political contest, with Kenyans online already coming up with their own jokes and creative interpretations of the campaign strategy.
For now, Murango's unusual merchandise has ensured that the Kirinyaga gubernatorial race is attracting attention beyond traditional political rallies and campaign speeches.
As the election season approaches, residents and political observers will be watching to see whether other candidates adopt similarly unconventional campaign strategies.
