The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Registration Bureau (NRB) have been accused of selectively issuing national identity cards and registering voters in areas perceived to be supportive of the government ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sources cited by The Standard allege that officers from IEBC, NRB, Deputy County Commissioners and constituency returning officers have been involved in facilitating voter registration using KIEMS kits.
The allegations also touch on claims of irregular issuance of Kenyan identification documents to foreign nationals in some border areas. Political leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka and Justin Muturi have separately called for investigations into the claims.
IEBC has denied allegations that it is being manipulated, saying its collaboration with government agencies such as NRB is part of its legal mandate to verify identities and maintain an accurate voters' register. The commission has also maintained that the voters' register remains under its exclusive custody and control.
The allegations come as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election, with renewed attention on the integrity of Kenya's identification and voter registration systems.
