Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has unveiled The Equitable Party (TEP), positioning the political outfit as his vehicle for the 2027 presidential election.

Sifuna was unveiled as the party’s leader and preferred presidential candidate during an event held in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, 2026, marking a major step in his efforts to consolidate his presidential bid.
The launch was attended by several leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.
TEP party leader Gilbert Marava said the party had agreed to restructure its leadership to accommodate Sifuna and his supporters.
“On our end, we have decided to restructure, and in the process, those who registered will stay, and we will bring in our brothers,” Marava said.
Sifuna's move comes after months of political uncertainty surrounding his future in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he previously served as Secretary-General.
He had earlier signalled that he was looking for a new political vehicle to carry his 2027 presidential ambitions, telling supporters that they should allow him to seek another party that would take him to the ballot.
The unveiling of TEP now gives Sifuna a formal political platform as he seeks to build a nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The new political formation is also expected to play a role in discussions among opposition leaders seeking to establish a broader alliance ahead of the elections.
Political strategist Pauline Njoroge has already backed Sifuna's presidential ambitions, warning his potential rivals against underestimating his growing political movement.
With the 2027 presidential race beginning to take shape, Sifuna's decision to lead TEP is likely to intensify competition within Kenya's opposition and add another significant political vehicle to the race for State House.
