Human rights activist Mulinge Muteti has been found alive days after he was reported missing following protests in Nairobi.
According to Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, Muteti was found in the Lukenya area of Machakos at around 3am on Friday before making his way to a nearby Shell petrol station, where he sought help to contact his family.
Khalid said Muteti was weak, injured and disoriented when he was found. He was subsequently taken to a hospital in the Mlolongo area, where he is receiving medical treatment. His family and fellow activists have since gone to the facility to be with him.
Muteti had been missing since Monday, September 21, after reportedly leaving fellow activists in Nairobi's Central Business District to print a petition. His disappearance prompted concern from his family and human rights defenders, with the matter also being taken to court.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and how he ended up in Lukenya have not yet been established. Police had not publicly confirmed that Muteti was in their custody, and further details regarding his condition and the events leading to his discovery are expected as investigations continue.
