Kenya has confirmed its third Ebola case after a 65-year-old woman tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus disease while in quarantine.
According to the Ministry of Health, the woman had been isolated since October 6 after being identified as a primary contact of the first two confirmed patients.
Health Director-General Dr Patrick Amoth said she developed fever, a sore throat and general weakness before laboratory tests confirmed the infection.
Amoth noted that the woman was diagnosed early while in quarantine and is receiving supportive care, improving her chances of recovery while helping reduce the risk of further transmission.
The latest case follows the death of Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola patient, a Kenyan national who had reportedly lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years before falling ill.
Health officials are continuing efforts to identify, trace and monitor people who may have been exposed to the virus as the country works to contain the outbreak.
